On a bad day:
She's insecure, dependent, paranoid, self-defeating, petty, prejudiced
& masochistic. She internalizes her fear of disapproval & rejection
which eventually explodes into a rebellious overreaction.
Ironically causing the very thing she's the most afraid of.
But mostly:
She's a tough cookie who's extremely competent and
knowledgeable, but she's also hard to understand because
she's full of contradictions. Easy to like, hard to know.
Motive:
Scully is driven by the need for security, emotional stability,
the approval of others and control over her own anxieties.
How she does it:
Adhering to authority or the rules provides security.
Rules or beliefs she can obey and gain rewards for her obedience.
She likes having boundaries set for her. She puts her faith in the
strength of Mulder's beliefs, which she can a springboard off of.
Without Mulder she will lose her ability to make decisions and
suffer from a lack of purpose.
Anxiety:
She's anxious that she's anxious.
Her struggle with duality drives her crazy.
She's drawn to authority but rebels against it.
Emotionally she needs others, but keeps her own emotions private.
She's afraid of aggression but is capable of extreme aggression.
She's both likable and mean at the same time,
caring one minute, cranky the next.
She's Jekyll & Hyde to Mulder's Dr. Frankenstein.
Weakness:
Scully tends to look for scapegoats to overcompensate for her fears.
It's the dreaded Scully-in-denial syndrome, the SRE.
"I'm sure there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for my abduction
memories Mulder. It could have been a case of indigestion after
watching a bad science fiction movie."
Fears:
She's afraid of being a push over. She fears being persecuted.
She does the opposite of what she feels to overcompensate
for her anxieties.
Sexuality:
Power struggles are a turn on for her.
She's attracted to bad boys (evil) and father figures (good).
Scully's into S & M. "Spank me Daddy, I've been a bad girl."
She gets off on pain. (Never Again)
Pastlife Musing:
My crystal ball tells me she worked for the Spanish Inquisition.
Religion:
Scully loves a good cause, a set of values she can stand up for,
be it science or the church. God is the ultimate father.
She wants to be devoted & obedient but that rebellion thing
comes into play again. Ironic behavior for a saint, but that's Scully.
Communication:
Scully doesn't communicate clearly because she sends mixed
signals. Jung has difficulties defining this type of personality:
"...although the peculiar nature of this kind of feeling is very
noticeable once one has become aware of it."
I don't think Jung would be any more successful than Mulder is
at "reading" Scully's mind.
Scully's Little Secret:
What Mulder doesn't know is the depth of her anxiety over being
too compliant with him. She hides her anxiety well. "I'm fine Mulder."
The irony her constant attempts at independence causes the very
thing she fears, alienating him.
Seduction advise for Mulder:
Let her win a few times, give her a pat on the back, tell her how
much she means to you and you'll get lucky.
"You make me a whole person. I owe you everything. Scully
you owe me nothing. I don't think I can do this alone."
But I guess you already figured that one out. *Damn Bee!*
So what's the problem Dana?
She doesn't know how to feel about Mulder. She constantly needs
proof of his attitude towards her first.
Violence:
If Scully were to ever murder with intent,
she will most likely do it while under extreme stress during an
outburst of uncontrollable rage.
Childhood:
So how the hell did Scully get this way?
I blame her father, Bill Scully senior.
She identified with her father. Ahab to her Starbuck. It's no surprise Scully calls Mulder Ahab too. Her security depends on pleasing her father.
Career:
Scully's a natural at the FBI. Responsible and obedient.
Working for the FBI has more appeal than just being a doctor.
The good of "the group" has always been important to her.
She's a part a bigger cause at the FBI.
Justice for victims of injustice.
My advise to Scully:
Stop falling for bad boys and marry that nice Skinner fella.
